Dell Computers

Updated August 2008

I will show you here how easy it is to save on Dell Computers. On the cheap models like the Inspiron it is difficult to make any siginificant savings, say beyond $50. On the higher end machines like the XPS we can save hundreds of $$$. The example I will show you here is the basic XPS 630 without Monitor. I think this is more fair since it is the computer we are after to save on. Monitor have their own savings and are difficult to compare anyway.

To check the configuration of the XPS 630 go to www.dell.com. At the time of writing (August 2008) the XPS 630 had the following components:Dell Computers

  • CPU: Intel E8400 Core2Duo 3.00 GHz
  • OS: Microsoft Vista Home Premium SP1
  • Optical Drive: DVDRW 16x
  • RAM: 2 x 1 GB DDR2 800
  • Hard Drive: 320 GB SATA2
  • Video Card: ATI Radeon HD3870 512MB
  • Sound: 7.1 Channel on-board
  • Keyboard/Mouse: Dell USB
Total cost: US$ 1149 + 50 (CPU upgrade) = US$ 1199

Now take a look at The Basher below. As you can see I have tried to use the same computer components. Since the E8300 cannot be bought at online retailers and is cheaper than the E8400, I changed the Dell XPS configuration to the E8400 processor instead (adds US$ 50). Another difference is the Optical Drive, I put in a 20x DVDRW. I have no idea where Dell found a 16x - overstock? The memory of the XPS 630 is DDR2 800, while the Motherboard I have choosen (ASRock TurboTwins Wi-Fi) use DDR2 1066 (slightly more expensive). The other components are basically the same as the XPS 630 of Dell Computers.

The Basher though, at least in my opinion, has a much nicer case. I am also certain that the Silverstone Element Power Supply is better on the Basher with a extraordinarily quite fan (only 19 dB). The ASRock TurboTwins Motherboard also includes Wi-Fi, an expensive extra on the XPS 630. The Video Card, Sapphire Radeon HD3870 with 512 MB, is pretty much an equivalent to the Dell Computers. All in all The Basher is much better deal than the XPS 630. Besides, try to overclock the Dell - impossible! The Basher can easily be overclocked even by a novice to 3.6 GHz via the BIOS. YEAH!

The Basher

dell computersTotal cost: US$ 923 or a cool US$ 276 in savings!
