Computer Mouse
The original Computer Mouse stems back to the mid 60-ties. It was not until the mid 80-ties that it became a common input device with the introduction of the Apple Macintosh. Before that it was mostly a novelty available on some computers from Xerox and a few others. The Mouse is our second main input device beside the Keyboard. The Mouse is a pointing device and makes many tasks a lot easier and faster. Especially since we moved from text based user interface (for example DOS) to graphical user interface (for example Windows). You can still use the Keyboard to mark text and click on buttons, but it is so much easier with a Mouse. The Mouse improves efficiency and productivity for many common tasks. Besides in some applications it is absolutely necessary. Most Mice are not of the original kind with a ball that registered the movements. Now even the cheapest mice are optical. They normally use a LED (Light-emitting Diod) to light up the surface and the through an image sensor takes pictures of the surface. The LED nowadays comes in many different colors, although red is still the most common. High-end mice use a laser to register movements. The laser significantly increases the resolution and therefore precision. For gamers this is very important, for example in First-Person Shooters (FPS). Mice comes either as wired or wireless. Especially when it comes to the Mouse a wireless one is preferred. Wireless technology uses the 2.4 GHz band or sometimes Bluetooth. That wire can really test your patience sometimes, if it get stuck. An accessory to the Mouse is the mouse pad. Mouse pad surfaces that increase precision is a science of itself and a few companies specializes on giving gamers the best possible pad surface.
How to choose a Computer MouseChoose a mouse according to your intended use. An optical mouse is good for most users. Gamers should go for a wired High-end Mouse and a matching mouse pad. I recommend a wireless Mouse for most other users. They start at about US$20.
BrandsAs with Keyboards, there exist many Mice manufacturers. Be careful to buy from an unknown brand because most of the time they are of very low quality. The brands listed below are of good quality, although you certainly will find some unworthy products by these as well. - Razer
- Logitech
- Microsoft
- Kensington
- Targus
