Computer Keyboard
The Computer Keyboard is a relic from over 100 years ago when the Typewriter was invented. The principle is still the same although the layout has changed and keys have been added. The Keyboard is along with the Mouse our main input device. There wouldn't be much done without a Keyboard. One of the major applications for a computer is text editing (word processing). Imagine that without a Keyboard.Keyboards comes in many different sizes and formats. The Keyboard can seem to be a simple device since it has been around for so long and the technology is simple. But even for the Keyboard technology advances. For example we now have wireless Keyboards which were not available just a few years ago. We also have special Keyboards for Gamers and Multimedia. Then there is the tactile feel of the keys. There are several different technologies when it comes to the function of the keys. They are all mechanical although there are some big differences. Very thin keyboards use the same technology as laptops. Instead of using a metal spring a rubber dome is used, which can be made with a much lower profile. If you want a very good keyboard with high tactile feel go with the old spring type. Keytronic have some very good ones. Wireless technology has also reached Keyboards. The most common technology is 2.4 GHz, while Bluetooth and Infrared is also available. 2.4 GHz wireless is the best for desktop computers, so stick with this one. Bluetooth is normally more expensive and Infrared must have line of sight to work. The Keyboard is very much a matter of intended use and personal taste. A gamer would for sure want a special gamer's Keyboards. And a writer would probably appreciate an ergonomical Keyboard. And a Home Theater System definitely needs a wireless Multimedia Keyboard. Some Keyboards are sold as a package together with a Mouse. If you don't have any special needs these packages can be a good deal. Usually you save money as well compared to buying separately.
How to choose a Computer KeyboardChoose a Keyboard based on what you are going to use it for. If you are gamer then choose a gamers edition Keyboard. If you are on a Budget choose a package with Keyboard and Mouse. If you don't like cables (I don't) then choose a wireless. Wireless will be more expensive then a wired and also needs batteries. But cables can be a real drag. For gamers there is only one choice, wired. If you can choose a Keyboard from a well known manufacturer, like Keytronic, Logitech or Microsoft. Keyboards are cheap, starting at about US$10.
BrandsI mention here just the big four. Many others abound. Some offer inexpensive Computer Keyboards, others special types for Gamers or Multimedia style. Some are very cheaply made and are horrible to use. Keytronic is the best in my opinion, but if you have special needs then a go for a small reputable manufacturer, for example Saitek.
