Computer Data Storage
There are several Computer Data Storage types. The most common is the Hard Drive. Other types that almost all computers are equipped with is an Optical Drive. The first format was the CD (Compact Disc), after that came the DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) and the latest format is the Blue-Ray developed by Sony.Every new format has come about because we crave more storage space. The CD holds 700 MB, the DVD 4.7 GB (single layer) and the Blue-Ray 25 GB (single layer). Quite a dramatic increase to each new format. The driver behind this increase is the development in CPU power and quality. The CPU can nowadays easily handle editing of movies and thus we need a format where we can store it on. Advances has also been made in quality, because with the advent of better Video and Monitor resolution (including formats like HDTV), we need more space to insure quality. Not only can a computer data storage type like a CD/DVD player be useful to play movies, but we can also store information or data on a DVD. So a DVD can be used for data back-up as well. Or free up space on the Hard Drive by storing less used information on a DVD disc. Or you can burn downloaded music to a CD in order to listen to it on your Hi-Fi system.
Other forms of computer data storage is flash cards. They come in numerous formats, for example SD (Secure Digital) and CF (Compact Flash). Most of them are used in digital cameras but DAP ( Digital Audio Player), or MP3 players as they are mostly called, and mobile phones (cellular phones) also make use of them. You need a card reader in order to extract the content on these cards. Card readers can be both internal and external. In any case they are very cheap. A computer data storage type that is similar to the flash cards is the USB drive. The only difference is that the USB drive connect to the USB port. The advantage of the USB drive is the portability. Every computer have an USB port and therefore the data on the USB drive can be shared easily.
How to choose an Optical DriveYou should always install an Optical Drive. The DVD is the most common. The Blu-Ray is still somewhat expensive, but if you are a movie buff then you should certainly buy one. Just remember that the Video Card and Monitor must also be of high quality. The DVD should be of the DVD-RW type (or DVD+RW) since you might want to rewrite data onto the same disc several times if you are backing up data. A DVD Optical Drive can be had for US$25. If you have a digital camera or any other device that uses flash cards, then install an internal card reader, they are usually less than US$10.
BrandsNowadays there are not so many still in business of producing Optical Drives. There are enough though to let us have a good choice of brands and models. The brands I mention here are the common ones, you might find other less known when going shopping. There is no big difference between the similar model but some are better. - LiteOn
- Samsung
- Asus
- LG
- OptiArc (Sony NEC)
- Pioneer
