Alien Computers
Updated August 2008For those of you not in the know, Alien Computers is a premium computer producer. They are considered top-notch and only deal with the best. That doesn't hinder us from comparing the Alienware Aurora Value with a home built one. Since Alienware are much more open about what actually goes in their machines it will be easier to make straight comparisons. They are also nicely designed and have some neat features. But everything they can offer, you can build. Cheaper and better at that! To check the configuration of the Alienware Aurora Value go to www.alienware.com. At the time of writing (August 2008) the Aurora Value had the following components: - Case: Alienware P2
- CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9550 2.2 GHz
- Power Supply: Alienware 750 W
- OS: Microsoft Vista Home Premium SP1
- Optical Drive: DVDRW 20x
- RAM: Corsair Dominator 2 GB DDR2 1066
- Hard Drive: 500 GB SATA2
- Video Card: ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB
- Sound: 7.1 Channel on-board
- Keyboard/Mouse: Alienware
Total cost: US$ 1099 + 570 (upgrades) = US$ 1669In order to spice up things a little I made some upgrades. Since it was an AMD configuration I opted fot the new Phenom X4 9550. I also added High-Performance DDR2 1066 RAM and a better Video Card, the ATI Radeon HD4850. All in all it added US$ 570 for a total cost of US$ 1669. Quite steep I think for what you really get from Alien Computers. I mean US$ 538 in savings by building your own is just fantastic. What do you think? If those saving sounds interesting take a look at The Zapper below. All components I have chosen are of the very best brands only. The case, for example, is Lian Li PC-60USB. As all Lian Li cases it is made entirely out of Aluminum, which in a way works as a giant heatsink. The Lian Li cases are well known for their outstanding quality. It might not be as visually appealing (matter of taste really) as the Alienware P2. The quality is much better though. I also added cooling and a 80PLUS Power Supply. And the MSI Motherboard have an amazing on-board SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme sound card, the Alien Computers Aurora only has the standard 7.1.
The Zapper - Case: Lian Li PC-60USB (5 colors above), US$ 100
- CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9550 2.2 GHz, US$ 154
- Motherboard: MSI K9N2 Diamond, US$ 230
- Cooling: Coolermaster Geminii S, US$ 36
- Power Supply: Xigmatek 80PLUS 750W, US$ 130
- OS: Microsoft Vista Home Premium SP1, US$ 100
- Optical Drive: Samsung DVDRW 20x, US$ 23
- RAM: Corsair Dominator 2 GB DDR2 1066, US$ 90
- Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint 500GB, US$ 70
- Video Card: ASUS EAH4850 Radeon 4850 512MB, US$ 183
- Sound: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme on-board
- Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech Deluxe 250, US$ 15
Total cost: US$ 1131 or a cool US$ 538 in savings!
